Following her sinking by agents of the French foreign intelligence services in Auckland harbour, on 10 July 1985, the Rainbow Warrior was refloated for forensic examination. Deemed irreparable, she was scuttled in Matauri Bay, near the Cavalli Islands (about 150 miles from Auckland, and about half as far from the northernmost tip of the North Island), on 12 December 1987, to serve as a dive wreck and fish sanctuary.
